You hear the words binge eating and what do you think? Do you think binge eating means simply just overeating? Do you associate binge eating with someone who does not have any willpower? Do you believe that binge eating is solely focused one the amount of food an individual consumes?
Binge eating disorder (BED) cannot be “fixed” with having the willpower to simply stop. All these associations are myths.
So, what does binge eating disorder really mean? On average, binge eating occurs in someone’s life about once a week for 3 months. Binge eating involves repeated episodes that are associated with one or more of the following (per the DSM V):
– Eating much more rapidly than normal
– Eating until feeling uncomfortably full
– Eating large amounts of food when not feeling physically hungry
– Eating alone because of being embarrassed by how much one is eating
– Feeling disgusted with oneself, depressed, or very guilty after overeating
Recognizing the warning signs of binge eating disorder is key for early intervention and effective treatment. If you or someone you know may be struggling with binge eating disorder, here are some key warning signs to be aware of:
– Disappearance and/or hoarding of food
– FAD dieting
– Preoccupation with food
– Preoccupation with body shape and size
– Eating alone and avoiding social situations with food
– Feelings of frequent guilt and/or depression
– Fluctuation in weight
– GI issues
Overall, my goal as a registered dietitian is to help you address eating disorders or disordered eating which involves understanding, support, and intervention. Recognizing the warning signs is the first step toward a healthier and more balanced relationship with food.
