How to Get Started with Receiving Treatment for Your Eating Disorder

How to Get Started with Receiving Treatment for Your Eating Disorder

Taking the first step towards treating an eating disorder can be overwhelming, but it is often the one of the hardest parts of someone’s journey. Whether you are seeking help for yourself or a loved one, it’s an extremely brave and pivotal decision for anyone to make, and it is also crucial to begin the journey to recovery.

Who to call?

So, you want to reach out to a professional for help, but who do you call? Ghostbusters, just kidding ;). Here are a few healthcare professionals to reach out to who can guide you in the right direction for appropriate treatment recommendations:

  • Primary Care Physician (understands eating disorders)
  • Psychiatrist or Psychologist (understands eating disorders)
  • Registered Dietitian (specializing in eating disorders)
  • Therapist (specializing in eating disorders)
  • A treatment facility who offers a free assessment (see below for treatment center options)

Although it is ideal for someone to reach out to an eating disorder specialized professional, it’s not always openly available to do so. Reaching out to a trusted individual is a good start.

What to say?

Making an important call, especially one regarding your health, can oftentimes be overwhelming. You do not need to have all of the answers. You do not need to know what type of eating disorder you have. You do not need to know specifically what to say. Voicing your concern is enough to initiate the process. Your healthcare professional will help guide you in the right direction.

Need help seeking support?

Here are a few resources you can utilize to set you up with resources, support groups, support for those struggling with eating disorders, and information on treatment options:
